Unisex skincare brand Salt & Stone, founded by former professional snowboarder Nima Jalali, is redefining self-care with a focus on natural ingredients and sustainable practices. Based in Los Angeles, the brand blends active ingredients from the sea and mountains with advanced skin science and intoxicating fragrances for a sensorial experience that soothes and restores.
The Story Behind Salt & Stone
Nima Jalali, a professional snowboarder in his twenties, experienced a knee injury that led him to explore natural approaches to healing. Embracing natural foods and skincare products, he found it difficult to discover a deodorant and sunscreen that met his standards. Inspired by his love for the ocean (salt) and the mountains (stone), Nima decided to create his own products that catered to his needs. Thus, Salt & Stone was born, combining his passion for surfing and snowboarding.
Here is a short interview with Nima Jalali.
How do you choose which ingredients to include in your products?
“We avoid any nasty chemicals which are proven to be bad for your body. We really want to make products that are both safe and effective. Our ingredients are grown and produced in ethical and sustainable ways without the use of pesticides, and we never use artificial fragrances, sulfates, petrochemicals, parabens, phthalates, or GMOs. All of our packaging is recyclable and made from post-consumer recycled materials, and we never test on animals. Our products are also manufactured using renewable solar and hydroelectric energy. We combine natural, active ingredients with scientifically proven effectiveness and inspiring scents of bergamot, hinoki, santal, or vetiver. Each product is made from a carefully selected blend of antioxidant and nutrient-rich ingredients, including algae, spirulina, and seaweed.”
Your favorite Salt & Stone product is…?
“Our natural deodorants formulated for 48-hour protection—I can’t live without them. Also, our SPF 50 tinted stick; I love it and use it every day!”
What are the most important things that a consumer should look for when choosing natural skincare products?
“We should all question the ingredients in our products, especially those that sit on our skin all day. For me, it’s about avoiding harsh chemicals like oxybenzone, which is proven to disrupt hormones. I’m okay with safe synthetics if they serve a purpose, are not dangerous, and help improve a formula.”
